So what is ABORM and what is the significance?
According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, approximately 3 million couples in the United States are unable to conceive after one year of trying. The diagnosis of infertility is usually given to couples who have been attempting to conceive for six months to one year without success.
Formed by leading professionals in the field of Oriental Reproductive Medicine, the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine (ABORM) has set the standard of care in this field. Working with its Western medicine counterparts, The American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the (ASRM) Pacific Coast Reproductive Society (PCRS) the ABORM advocates integrated Western and Oriental medicine treatment of infertility.
While official board certification in the field of infertility in this area is new in the United States, specialization in Oriental Medicine is not a new concept. Chinese medicine has a history of specialization dating back at least to the 1600s. In China today there are large Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hospitals dedicated to gynecology. At these hospitals hundreds of patients with conditions ranging from infertility, irregular and painful menses, habitual miscarriages, PCOS, endometriosis, uterine fibroids and menopausal symptoms are successfully treated with custom herbal prescriptions every day. Additionally, these doctors employed both TCM diagnostics with hormone panels, ultrasounds and basil body temperature charts (BBT) to form the most comprehensive analysis and treatment plan.
It is in this spirit that the ABORM was formed. To become an ABORM fellow, candidates must pass a rigorous examination that measures competency in both Western and TCM reproductive physiology, pathology, diagnosis and treatment.
